In Ayurveda, shortness of breath is termed Shwasa Roga, primarily involving the Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory channels). Shortness of breath at rest, especially when relieved by sitting upright, is a hallmark of Tamaka Shwasa. It is caused by the obstruction (Margavarodha) of Vata Dosha by vitiated Kapha (mucus). This blockage originates in the Amashaya (stomach), progresses to the Hridaya (heart), and manifests in the Phuphusa (lungs), leading to constricted airways and laboured breathing even without physical exertion.
Dosha imbalance
Vata aggravation (specifically Prana Vayu and Udana Vayu)
Kapha accumulation (causing obstruction)
Margavarodha (blockage of channels by Kapha)
Pitta involvement (in inflammatory stages or Pratamaka Shwasa)
