Rediscover Ayurveda
A 5,000-year-old medical system tailored for your unique body, mind, and spirit.
Definitions & Origins
The word Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit terms Ayur (life) and Veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda translates to "The Science of Life."
Unlike modern medicine which often focuses on treating symptoms, Ayurveda focuses on maintaining health through the balance of life forces, known as Doshas.
"Swasthya"
"A person is healthy when their Doshas are balanced, their digestive fire is strong, their tissues and excretion are normal, and their soul, senses, and mind are full of bliss."
— Sushruta SamhitaThe Three Pillars of Health
According to Ayurveda, every person is made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These combine to form the three life forces or Doshas.
Vata
Space + Air
Governs all movement in the body, including breathing, blood flow, and nerve impulses. Vata types are typically energetic, creative, and quick- learners.
- Light, dry, cold qualities
- Associated with change
- Needs routine and warmth
Pitta
Fire + Water
Controls digestion, metabolism, and energy production. Pitta types are known for being intelligent, ambitious, and determined leaders.
- Hot, sharp, light qualities
- Associated with transformation
- Needs cooling and moderation
Kapha
Earth + Water
Governs structure, cohesion, and lubrication. Kapha types are defined by their strength, stamina, groundedness, and compassionate nature.
- Heavy, slow, cool qualities
- Associated with stability
- Needs stimulation and movement
