Numbness or tingling in hands or feet (Suptata)

Medically Reviewed by Ayuveda Clinical Team (Lead Medical Reviewer: Dr. Nitin Mohite, BAMS, MBA • Medical Logic Developer, UK • Clinical Profile • LinkedIn).

In Ayurveda, numbness and tingling are recognized as Suptata or Supti. This condition is primarily viewed as a Vata Vyadhi (Vata-related disorder) where the Vyana Vayu, responsible for circulation and nerve conduction, becomes aggravated or obstructed. The obstruction (Avarana) is often caused by the accumulation of Kapha or Ama (digestive toxins) in the Srotas (channels), which restricts the flow of Prana (life force) and blood to the extremities. This leads to a loss of sensation (Supti) or a 'pins and needles' feeling (Harsha).
