Diarrhea (Atisara)

Medically Reviewed by Ayuveda Clinical Team (Lead Medical Reviewer: Dr. Nitin Mohite, BAMS, MBA • Medical Logic Developer, UK • Clinical Profile • LinkedIn).

In Ayurveda, diarrhea is known as Atisara. It is defined as the excessive flow (Ati) of liquid fecal matter (Sara) through the rectum. The fundamental cause is Agnimandya (weakened digestive fire) which results in the formation of Ama (undigested toxic residue). This Ama, mixed with the body's watery elements (Ap-dhatu), is forced downward by the Vata dosha into the colon (Pakwashaya), leading to frequent watery stools. Authentic texts like the Charaka Samhita emphasize distinguishing between the Ama stage (acute/toxic) and the Nirama stage (mature/non-toxic), as the treatment approach for each is fundamentally different.
