Breast pain or tenderness (Stana Shoola / Stana Peeda)

Medically Reviewed by Ayuveda Clinical Team (Lead Medical Reviewer: Dr. Nitin Mohite, BAMS, MBA • Medical Logic Developer, UK • Clinical Profile • LinkedIn).

In Ayurveda, breast pain is referred to as 'Stana Shoola' or 'Stana Peeda'. It is primarily viewed as a disorder of 'Rasa Dhatu' (plasma/lymph), as 'Stanya' (breast milk/tissue) is its 'Upadhatu' (sub-tissue). According to the Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita, pain occurs when 'Avarodha' (blockage) happens in the 'Rasa Vaha Srotas' (nutritional channels) and 'Artava Vaha Srotas' (menstrual channels). This stagnation leads to 'Stana Granthi' (glandular thickening) or localized inflammation. The condition is often linked to the pre-menstrual phase (Ritukala), where 'Vata' pushes 'Kapha' into the breast tissue, causing heaviness, swelling, and pain.
