Suryast-Vayu-Shuddhi: Evening Air Clearing Ritual (Suryast Vayu Shuddhi)
In Ayurveda, the transition from day to night is a critical time for Vata regulation. As the sun sets, the atmosphere shifts, and the mind requires a transition from the activity of the day to the stillness of the night. Suryast-Vayu-Shuddhi involves creating a clean, fragrant, and tranquil environment to support the nervous system and prepare the body for deep, restorative sleep.
When to practise
Perform this ritual at sunset (Suryast) or shortly after, as you prepare your home for the evening hours.
Beginner shortcut
If a full fumigation is not possible, simply open windows for a few minutes to circulate fresh air, then light a single, high-quality incense stick (such as sandalwood or agarwood) to shift the sensory environment.
Where it fits in your routine
- Evening meal (light) -> Suryast-Vayu-Shuddhi -> Gentle self-massage (Abhyanga) -> Restful sleep.
What you need
- Dhoop-Dani (Incense Burner): A traditional metal or clay vessel used to safely hold burning charcoal and incense resins.
- Natural Resin or Incense: Traditional materials like Agaru (aloeswood), Guggulu, or sandalwood.
- Natural Charcoal: Used to ignite the incense resins.
- Clean Linens: Freshly laundered bedding to complement the purified air.
How to practise
- 1. Clear the Space: Ensure your bedroom or living area is tidy and free of dust. Open windows briefly to allow stagnant air to escape, then close them to create a protected, draft-free environment.
- 2. Prepare the Fumigation: Place a small piece of natural resin or incense on a lit charcoal disc within your Dhoop-Dani. Ensure it is placed on a heat-resistant surface.
- 3. Circulate the Fragrance: Gently carry the burner through the room, allowing the smoke to reach the corners. Focus on the areas where you will be sleeping or resting.
- 4. Set the Intention: As the smoke clears the air, take a moment to consciously release the stresses of the day. Recall your preceptor or a guiding principle to settle the mind.
- 5. Final Settlement: Place the burner in a safe spot until the incense has fully extinguished. Ensure the room is comfortable, quiet, and dimly lit.
Benefits
- Supports a calm and composed mind before sleep.
- Promotes a sensory environment conducive to relaxation.
- Helps transition the body from daily activity to nocturnal rest.
- Reduces the perception of stale or heavy air in the home.
Cautions
- Ensure the room is well-ventilated; do not inhale excessive smoke directly.
- Keep burning materials away from curtains, bedding, and flammable objects.
- If you have asthma, respiratory sensitivities, or allergies, consult a practitioner before using incense or smoke-based rituals.
- Stop immediately if you experience dizziness, coughing, or irritation.
Common mistakes
- Performing the ritual in a completely sealed room without ventilation.
- Using synthetic fragrances instead of traditional, natural resin-based incense.
- Engaging in stimulating activities immediately after the ritual.
- Ignoring the need for a clean, clutter-free space before beginning.
Dosha notes
- vata: Highly beneficial; the warmth and grounding scents help pacify Vata's tendency toward restlessness.
- kapha: Use stimulating, spicy resins like Guggulu to clear heaviness.
- pitta: Use cooling scents like sandalwood to avoid overheating the environment.
Seasonal notes
In winter and spring, prioritize warming, resinous scents like Guggulu or Agaru. In summer, lighter, cooling scents like sandalwood are more appropriate.
