Karna Poorana (Ear Oiling) (Karna Pūrana)
Karna Poorana is a gentle, soothing practice that involves applying warm, nourishing oil to the outer ear canal. In Ayurveda, the ears are considered a primary seat of Vata dosha; keeping them lubricated and warm is traditionally believed to support clarity of hearing and a calm, grounded nervous system.
When to practise
Best practiced in the morning as part of your Dinacharya (daily routine), or in the evening to promote relaxation before sleep.
Beginner shortcut
If you are short on time, simply massage a drop of warm oil onto the outer ear (the pinna) and the area just behind the earlobe rather than filling the canal.
Where it fits in your routine
- Best performed after Abhyanga (self-massage) and before a warm shower.
What you need
- Dropper: A clean glass or stainless steel dropper for controlled application.
- Small Bowl: A small ceramic or metal bowl to hold the oil while warming.
- Sesame Oil: High-quality, organic, unrefined, food-grade sesame oil is traditionally preferred for its warming and grounding properties.
How to practise
- 1. Warm the Oil: Place a small amount of oil in a clean bowl. Warm the bowl by placing it in a larger container of hot water until the oil is comfortably warm to the touch (test on your inner wrist).
- 2. Positioning: Lie down on your side on a comfortable surface, placing a soft towel under your head to catch any potential drips.
- 3. Application: Using a clean dropper, gently place 2–3 drops of the warm oil into the opening of the ear canal. Do not insert the dropper into the ear.
- 4. Massage: Gently massage the area around the ear and the tragus (the small flap of cartilage) to help the oil settle.
- 5. Rest: Remain on your side for 3–5 minutes to allow the oil to absorb. Repeat on the other side.
- 6. Cleanse: Sit up slowly and use a clean tissue to gently wipe away any excess oil from the outer ear.

Dosha notes
- vata: Highly recommended for balancing Vata's dry and cold qualities.
- kapha: Generally not required, but can be done occasionally if dryness is present.
- pitta: Use with caution; consider using coconut oil instead of sesame if you have high Pitta.
Seasonal notes
Particularly beneficial during the autumn and early winter months when the dry, cold qualities of Vata dosha are most prevalent.
