Thrush in men and women (Kandida)
Thrush, also known as candidiasis, is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida species, most frequently Candida albicans. It can affect various parts of the body, including the mouth (oral thrush), throat, genitals (vaginal thrush in women, penile thrush in men), and other moist skin areas like the armpits and groin. While generally harmless, it can cause discomfort and may recur. Thrush is not typically classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), although sexual activity can sometimes trigger it or, less commonly, lead to its transmission.
Common symptoms
White, creamy, or yellow raised patches or lesions (often described as cottage cheese-like) on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of the throat, which may bleed if scraped (Oral Thrush).
Redness and soreness inside the mouth and at the corners of the mouth (Oral Thrush).
Pain or burning sensation in the mouth or throat (Oral Thrush).
Loss of taste or an unpleasant/altered taste (Oral Thrush).
Cottony feeling in the mouth (Oral Thrush).
Difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing (Oral Thrush).
White vaginal discharge (often like cottage cheese), typically without a smell (Vaginal Thrush).
Itching and irritation around the vulva and vagina (Vaginal Thrush).
Soreness and stinging during sex or when urinating (Vaginal Thrush).
Swelling or redness around the vulva and vagina (Vaginal Thrush).
Pain or discomfort during sex (Vaginal Thrush).
Irritation, burning, and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin (balanitis) (Penile Thrush).
White discharge (like cottage cheese) under the foreskin (Penile Thrush).
An unpleasant smell (Penile Thrush).
Difficulty pulling back the foreskin (Penile Thrush).
Soreness or itching of the penis (Penile Thrush).
Pain or discomfort when urinating or during sex (Penile Thrush).
Red rash at the head of the penis (may appear shiny or feel tight) (Penile Thrush).
Red, itchy, or painful rash that scales over with white or yellow discharge in skin folds (e.g., armpits, groin, between fingers, under breasts, navel).
Sometimes no symptoms at all.
Possible causes
Overgrowth of Candida fungus, most commonly Candida albicans, which naturally resides on the skin and in moist areas of the body.
Taking antibiotics.
Weakened immune system (e.g., due to diabetes, HIV, cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy, organ transplantation, or other chronic illnesses).
Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Irritated or damaged skin.
Poor oral hygiene, especially with dentures that don't fit properly (for oral thrush).
Using inhaled corticosteroids for asthma.
Dry mouth.
Smoking.
Wearing tight clothing or non-cotton underwear (for genital thrush).
Using perfumed toiletries, soaps, bubble baths, or vaginal hygiene products that can irritate the skin.
Sexual activity can trigger thrush or, less often, pass it on.
Obesity, as skin folds create a warm, moist environment.
Having a tight foreskin in men.
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, thrush, or candidiasis, is often understood as an imbalance stemming from impaired digestion (Mandagni) and the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body. When the digestive fire (Agni) is weak, food is not properly processed, leading to Ama buildup, which creates an environment conducive to Candida overgrowth. This condition is primarily linked to an imbalance of the Pitta and Kapha doshas. Pitta imbalance can lead to heat and inflammation, causing burning sensations, irritation, and redness in affected areas. Kapha imbalance, characterized by excess moisture and mucus, encourages fungal growth, particularly in moist areas like the mouth, throat, and genital tract. Factors such as poor diet, stress, weakened immunity (Ojas deficiency), and prolonged antibiotic use can exacerbate this condition. For oral thrush specifically, the symptoms can be correlated with 'Kaphaja Mukhapaka' in Ayurvedic literature.
Ayurvedic herbs
Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Potent anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and immune-boosting properties; helps inhibit Candida growth and reduces inflammation.
Neem (Azadirachta indica): Powerful antifungal and antibacterial herb that cleanses the body of toxins and pathogens; effective against Candida overgrowth.
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis): Soothing, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties.
Garlic (Allium sativum): Strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties.
Triphala: An excellent immune supercharger with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity; helps detoxify the body and balance gut flora.
Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Stimulates the immune system and helps detoxify the body by improving liver function.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Boosts the immune system and helps reduce stress.

Lifestyle tips
Maintain proper hygiene, especially keeping affected areas clean and dry.
Practice tongue scraping to clear toxins from the mouth and promote oral health.
Eat regular meals at consistent times to strengthen digestive fire (Agni) and prevent Ama accumulation.
Manage stress through practices like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises (Pranayama) to support immune function and overall well-being.
Ensure adequate and restorative sleep.
Engage in moderate, regular exercise to improve immunity.
Avoid irritants like harsh soaps, scented products, and tight or synthetic clothing that traps moisture and heat.
Consider Ayurvedic detoxification therapies like Panchakarma (e.g., Virechana, Basti) for chronic or recurrent candidiasis to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins and restore digestive health.
