Rickets and Osteomalacia (Phakka Roga / Asthikshaya)

Rickets and osteomalacia are conditions characterized by the softening and weakening of bones due to impaired mineralization, most commonly caused by a deficiency in vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. Rickets specifically refers to this process in children whose growth plates have not yet closed, often leading to skeletal deformities. Osteomalacia is the adult equivalent, where the bone-building process is disrupted, resulting in weak bones that are prone to fractures and pain.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Rickets is primarily correlated with 'Phakka Roga,' a nutritional disorder described extensively in the Kashyapa Samhita. It is characterized by the softening of bones and the inability of a child to stand or walk properly by the age of one. Osteomalacia in adults is viewed as 'Asthikshaya' (depletion of bone tissue) or 'Asthimardava' (softness of bones). The condition arises from a deficiency in 'Rasa Dhatu' (plasma) and 'Asthi Dhatu' (bone tissue), often caused by 'Agnimandya' (weak digestive fire) which hinders the absorption of minerals, and 'Srotorodha' (blockage in the channels of nourishment).
