Retinal detachment describes an emergency situation in which a critical layer of tissue (the retina) at the back of the eye pulls away from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with oxygen and nutrients. It often causes permanent vision loss if not treated immediately.
Common symptoms
The sudden appearance of many floaters (tiny specks that seem to drift through your field of vision)
Flashes of light in one or both eyes (photopsia)
Blurred vision
Gradually reduced side (peripheral) vision
A curtain-like shadow over your visual field
Possible causes
Aging-related changes to the vitreous gel
Eye injury or trauma
Advanced diabetes (diabetic retinopathy)
Severe nearsightedness (myopia)
Previous eye surgery such as cataract removal
Inflammatory eye diseases
Medical treatment
Laser surgery (photocoagulation) to seal retinal tears
Freezing (cryopexy) to secure the retina to the eye wall
Pneumatic retinopexy (injecting a gas bubble into the eye)
Scleral buckling (indenting the wall of the eye with a silicone band)
Vitrectomy (removal and replacement of the vitreous fluid)
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, retinal detachment is conceptualized as a critical 'Drishtigata Roga' where the 'Patala' (layers) of the eye are compromised. It is primarily driven by an acute 'Vata' aggravation that causes 'Drishti-vibhasha' (visual displacement), leading to the separation of the sensory layer from the supporting vascular tissue. It reflects a state of 'Dhatu Kshaya' (tissue depletion) specifically affecting the 'Majja' and 'Rakta' dhatus within the 'Netra' (eye).
Ayurvedic dietary guidelines
Regular consumption of Cow Ghee (Ghrita) to pacify Vata
Inclusion of Pitta-pacifying cooling foods like cucumber and melon
Daily intake of soaked almonds and walnuts for nerve health
Avoidance of dry, astringent, and excessively fermented foods
