Raynaud's (Siragata Vata)

Raynaud's (also known as Raynaud's phenomenon or Raynaud's disease) is a condition where smaller blood vessels, typically in the fingers and toes, spasm and narrow in response to cold temperatures or stress. This limits blood flow, causing the affected areas to feel numb and cold, and often change color (white, then blue, then red upon warming). There are two main types: primary Raynaud's (Raynaud's disease), which is more common and generally milder, and secondary Raynaud's (Raynaud's phenomenon), which is less common but more serious and is caused by an underlying health condition.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Raynaud's disease is primarily understood as a manifestation of Vata dosha imbalance, specifically correlated with 'Siragata Vata'. This condition involves the channels of circulation (Srotas) and the nervous system. Aggravated Vata leads to excessive constriction of blood vessels (vasospasm), which reduces blood flow to the extremities. Factors like cold exposure and stress further disturb the Vata dosha. A weakened Agni (digestive fire) can result in the accumulation of Ama (toxins), which obstructs the Srotas and further impairs circulation. While Vata is the primary dosha involved, secondary Pitta involvement may occur if there is inflammation or a burning sensation after an episode.
