Prostate cancer is a disease where malignant cells form in the tissues of the prostate, a small walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system that produces seminal fluid. It is one of the most common types of cancer in men and typically grows slowly, often remaining confined to the gland for years, though some forms are aggressive and can spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones and lymph nodes.
Common symptoms
Difficulty starting urination or a weak/interrupted urine stream
Frequent urge to urinate, especially at night
Blood in the urine (hematuria) or semen
Pain or burning during urination
Painful ejaculation
Persistent pain in the back, hips, or pelvis
Sudden erectile dysfunction
Unexplained weight loss and fatigue in advanced stages
Possible causes
Genetic mutations (DNA changes) in prostate cells
Inherited gene mutations, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2
Advanced age (risk increases significantly after age 50)
Family history of prostate, breast, or ovarian cancer
Race (African American men have a higher risk of developing and dying from the disease)
Obesity and high-fat diets
Medical treatment
Active surveillance or watchful waiting for slow-growing tumors
Radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate)
Radiation therapy (External beam radiation or Brachytherapy)
Hormone therapy (Androgen Deprivation Therapy to lower testosterone)
Chemotherapy for advanced or metastatic cancer
Immunotherapy and targeted drug therapy
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, prostate cancer is understood through the lens of 'Vatashthila' and 'Arbuda'. The prostate gland is known as 'Pourusha Granthi', situated within the 'Mutravaha Srotas' (urinary tract). The condition arises due to the vitiation of Apana Vayu (a subtype of Vata responsible for downward movement) and Kapha dosha, which leads to the formation of a 'Granthi' (cyst/swelling) or 'Arbuda' (tumor). When these doshas lodge in the 'Basti' (bladder) and 'Shukravaha Srotas' (reproductive system), they cause a hard, immobile growth that obstructs the flow of urine and disturbs the metabolic balance of 'Shukra Dhatu' (reproductive tissue).
Ayurvedic dietary guidelines
Adopt an alkaline-rich diet to reduce acidity in the body.
Increase intake of anti-inflammatory spices like Turmeric, Ginger, and Garlic.
Consume warm, freshly cooked meals that are easy to digest (Laghu Ahara).
Include cooling and diuretic vegetables like White Pumpkin, Cucumber, and Asparagus.
Minimize consumption of red meat, processed foods, and excessive dairy.
Avoid carbonated drinks, caffeine, and alcohol which irritate the bladder.
Drink warm water or herbal infusions throughout the day to flush toxins.
