Periods (heavy), see Heavy periods (Asrigdara, Rakta Pradara, Atyartav)

Heavy menstrual bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia, is a common condition characterized by abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding that can significantly interfere with daily life. It can lead to complications such as iron deficiency anemia due to substantial blood loss. In Ayurveda, this condition is often correlated with Asrigdara or Raktapradar and is primarily attributed to an imbalance of Pitta and Vata doshas.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, known as Menorrhagia in modern medicine, is primarily termed Asrigdara or Rakta Pradara. The term 'Asrigdara' literally means 'heavy flow of blood' or 'excessive discharge of blood per vaginum'. 'Rakta Pradara' translates to 'Rakta' (blood) and 'Pradara' (excessive flow). Another term used is Atyartav, where 'Atya' means excessive and 'Artav' means menstrual blood. This condition is often attributed to an imbalance, mainly of the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and transformation in the body and rules the blood and uterus. An increase in Pitta dosha leads to excessive bleeding due to its inherent 'fluidity' and increased heat. Vata dosha, responsible for the initiation and movement of periods, can also be involved, causing irregular uterine contractions and affecting blood and lymph movement. Additionally, an imbalance in Kapha dosha can lead to fluid accumulation, exacerbating the condition. Vitiation of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) is also a significant factor. Contributing factors include hormonal imbalances, mental stress, poor digestion (Agni), and unwholesome dietary and lifestyle habits.
