Ovarian cyst (Andashayagata Granthi)

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets that develop on or inside an ovary. Most cysts are 'functional,' meaning they form as a natural part of the menstrual cycle and are typically harmless. While many cysts go away on their own within a few months, some can grow large, rupture, or cause the ovary to twist (torsion), leading to pain and potential complications.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, ovarian cysts are primarily classified as a type of 'Granthi' (a glandular or nodular swelling) occurring within the 'Artava-vaha srotas' (female reproductive system). The condition is viewed as a result of 'Srotas-avarodha' (blockage of channels) caused by the accumulation of 'Ama' (undigested toxic waste) and the vitiation of Kapha and Vata doshas. Kapha provides the structural basis and fluid for the cyst, while Vata is responsible for the abnormal growth and cell division. This imbalance leads to the formation of fluid-filled or semi-solid sacs that disrupt the natural flow of 'Artava' (menstrual fluid/ovum).
