Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), recently renamed NF2-related schwannomatosis, is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of noncancerous (benign) tumors throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. The hallmark of the condition is the development of bilateral vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas) on the nerves that carry sound and balance information from the inner ear to the brain.
Common symptoms
Gradual or sudden hearing loss
Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
Poor balance or unsteadiness
Facial weakness or numbness
Vision problems, including childhood cataracts or blurred vision
Headaches
Numbness or weakness in the arms and legs (peripheral neuropathy)
Seizures
Skin lumps (schwannomas) or smooth, shiny skin marks
Difficulty swallowing or speech changes
Possible causes
Mutation in the NF2 gene located on chromosome 22
Autosomal dominant inheritance (50% chance of passing the gene to each child)
Spontaneous (de novo) genetic mutations in individuals with no family history (accounts for about 50% of cases)
Mosaicism, where only some cells in the body carry the genetic mutation
Medical treatment
Watchful waiting with regular MRI monitoring and hearing tests
Surgical removal of tumors (microsurgery) to relieve pressure or preserve function
Stereotactic radiosurgery (focused radiation) to slow or stop tumor growth
Drug therapies such as Bevacizumab (Avastin) to shrink tumors or stabilize hearing
Hearing rehabilitation including hearing aids, cochlear implants, or auditory brainstem implants (ABI)
Physical and occupational therapy for balance and mobility issues
Treatment for cataracts or other vision-related complications
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is understood through the lens of 'Granthi' (benign nodules) and 'Arbuda' (tumors or growths). Specifically, it is categorized under 'Nadi Dhatuja Granthi', which refers to growths arising from nerve tissue. The condition involves a complex interplay where aggravated Vata dosha causes irregular cellular division and nervous system disruption, while vitiated Kapha and Mamsa (muscle/connective tissue) provide the structural material for tumor growth. When affecting the ears (vestibular schwannomas), it correlates with 'Badhirya' (hearing loss) and 'Karna Kshveda' (tinnitus) due to the obstruction of 'Srotas' (channels) by the localized growth.
Ayurvedic dietary guidelines
Consume warm, freshly cooked, and easily digestible foods to pacify Vata.
Incorporate healthy fats like Ghee (clarified butter) to nourish the nervous system.
Prioritize 'Sattvic' foods like whole grains, mung beans, and sweet seasonal fruits.
Avoid cold, dry, processed, and fermented foods that aggravate Vata and Kapha.
Limit the intake of heavy, oily, and refined sugar products to prevent further Kapha accumulation.
