Multiple Myeloma (Asthimajjagat Vata / Rakta-Arbuda)

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that develops in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell in the bone marrow that normally produces antibodies. In myeloma, cancerous plasma cells multiply uncontrollably and crowd out healthy blood cells, producing abnormal proteins called monoclonal (M) proteins. This leads to bone damage, kidney failure, and a weakened immune system. While treatable, it is generally considered a chronic, incurable condition.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Multiple Myeloma is understood through the lens of Majja-gata Vata and Rakta-Arbuda. It is characterized as a malignant proliferation affecting the Majja Dhatu (bone marrow) and Rakta Dhatu (blood). Classical texts like the Sushruta Samhita describe similar neoplastic conditions as 'Arbuda' (major neoplasm), where the derangement of Dhatwagni (metabolic fire of tissues) leads to uncontrolled growth. The condition specifically involves the 'Vimarga gamana' (abnormal movement) of Pitta and Vata within the bone marrow, leading to 'Asthi-soushirya' (bone porosity) and 'Asthi-kshaya' (bone depletion), which manifests as the hallmark lytic lesions of Myeloma.
