Labyrinthitis and Vestibular Neuritis (Bhrama)

Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis are closely related disorders involving inflammation of the inner ear or the nerves connecting the inner ear to the brain. Vestibular neuritis involves swelling of the vestibular nerve, which carries balance signals, resulting in vertigo. Labyrinthitis involves inflammation of the labyrinth (the entire inner ear structure), which affects both the balance and hearing systems.

Possible causes

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, these conditions are primarily understood as Bhrama (vertigo/dizziness) caused by the vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas. Vestibular neuritis (nerve inflammation) and Labyrinthitis (inner ear inflammation) involve the Shrotra Indriya (organ of hearing/balance). The Vata dosha governs movement and the nervous system, while Pitta governs inflammation and metabolic processes. When these doshas are aggravated, often due to stress, infection (ama-related), or improper diet, they disrupt the balance-maintaining fluids and nerves in the inner ear, leading to a spinning sensation, instability, and nausea.
