Intracranial hypertension (Shirastarpaka-vridhi / Tarpaka Kapha Dushti)

Intracranial hypertension (IH) is a condition involving increased pressure inside the skull, occurring when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up or fails to drain properly. It can be categorized as 'idiopathic' (IIH), where the cause is unknown (also called pseudotumor cerebri), or 'secondary,' which results from an underlying injury or illness. The high pressure can compress the brain and optic nerve, mimicking the symptoms of a brain tumor and potentially leading to permanent vision loss.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, intracranial hypertension is viewed as a disturbance in Tarpaka Kapha, the sub-dosha responsible for lubricating and nourishing the brain and sense organs, which correlates to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). When Tarpaka Kapha becomes excessive or vitiated due to Srotas-avarodha (obstruction of the body's channels), it leads to increased pressure within the Shira (head). This condition is often managed under the categories of Shiroroga (head diseases) and Shotha (generalized or localized swelling), where the line of treatment focuses on clearing blockages and balancing Prana Vayu and Tarpaka Kapha.
