Hookworm, see Worms in humans (Krimi Roga)

Hookworm is a parasitic infection of the intestines caused by roundworms, primarily Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. It is common in tropical and subtropical regions, especially where sanitation is poor. The infection occurs when hookworm larvae penetrate the skin, typically through bare feet, then travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, are coughed up and swallowed, and finally mature in the small intestine. In the intestines, the adult worms attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, which can lead to various health problems, most notably iron-deficiency anemia and protein deficiency.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, worm infections, known as Krimi Roga, are a common health problem. These occur when parasites like hookworms settle in the intestines, leading to weakness, abdominal pain, and nutritional deficiencies. The Ayurvedic perspective views intestinal worms as an imbalance of the body's doshas, primarily Kapha and Vata, and sometimes Pitta. A weak digestive fire (Agni) is considered a major contributing factor, allowing worms to thrive. This weak Agni leads to the accumulation of toxins, or Ama, which creates an environment conducive for worm growth. Improper eating habits, an unhygienic lifestyle, and poor immunity further worsen the condition. Ayurveda aims to not only eliminate the worms but also strengthen digestion, balance body energies, and prevent recurrence.
