Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, tension headaches are primarily understood as an imbalance of Vata dosha, often with a Pitta element. Vata, which governs movement and the nervous system, when aggravated, leads to dryness, tightness, and dull, aching pain. This imbalance can disrupt the head's microchannels (srotas), weaken digestive fire (agni), and allow toxins (ama) to accumulate, interfering with plasma (rasa dhatu) and nervous tissue (majja dhatu). Common causes include stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, irregular meals, poor posture, exhaustion, dehydration, excessive straining of sense organs (like prolonged screen time), exposure to cold wind or sun, and suppressing natural urges. The pain is typically described as a dull, continuous, pressing type, often feeling like a tight band around the head, affecting the forehead, temples, occiput, neck, and shoulder muscles. It can be episodic or chronic.
