Goitre (Galaganda)

A goitre is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. While usually painless, a large goitre can cause a visible swelling and potentially compress the windpipe or esophagus, leading to respiratory or swallowing difficulties. It is often a sign of an underlying thyroid condition such as iodine deficiency, autoimmune disease, or the presence of nodules.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Goitre is identified as Galaganda, a condition characterized by a swelling in the neck region. It is described in classical texts like the Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita as a glandular growth (Granthi) that occurs due to the vitiation of Kapha and Vata doshas, which subsequently affects the Meda Dhatu (fat tissue) and Rasa Dhatu (plasma). Sushruta specifically classifies it based on the dominant dosha involved, such as Vataja, Kaphaja, and Medoja Galaganda, noting that it often arises from a sedentary lifestyle and poor metabolic fire (Agni).
