Down's syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material alters the course of development and causes the physical and intellectual characteristics associated with the syndrome, including growth delays and mild to moderate intellectual disability.
Common symptoms
Hypotonia (poor muscle tone)
Short neck with excess skin at the back
Flattened facial profile and small nose
Upward slanting eyes (palpebral fissures)
White spots on the iris (Brushfield spots)
Small ears and mouth
Single deep crease across the palm of the hand (Simian crease)
Short stature
Intellectual disability and developmental delays
Possible causes
Trisomy 21: A random error in cell division results in three copies of chromosome 21 in every cell
Mosaic Down syndrome: A rare form where only some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21
Translocation Down syndrome: Part of chromosome 21 becomes attached to another chromosome during or before conception
Medical treatment
Early intervention services including physical and speech therapy
Occupational therapy to assist with daily living skills
Specialized educational support
Regular screening for associated conditions like congenital heart defects, hearing loss, and thyroid dysfunction
Behavioral therapy
Ayurvedic perspective
Down's syndrome is classified under Adibala-pravritta Vyadhi, specifically as a result of Beejabhaga Avayava Dushti. This signifies a defect in the genetic components (sperm or ovum) at the time of conception. It results in developmental delays, intellectual disabilities known as Buddhimandya, and physical structural variations due to the vitiation of Vata and Kapha doshas during embryonic development.
