Diverticular disease occurs when small, bulging pouches (diverticula) develop in the lining of the digestive system, most commonly in the lower part of the large intestine (colon). When these pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is known as diverticulitis.
Common symptoms
Persistent pain, usually in the lower left side of the abdomen
Fever and chills
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal tenderness
Constipation or, less commonly, diarrhea
Bloating
Possible causes
Low-fiber diet leading to high pressure in the colon
Aging and the natural weakening of the colon wall
Obesity
Smoking
Physical inactivity
Genetics
Certain medications including NSAIDs, steroids, and opioids
Medical treatment
Antibiotics to treat infection
Clear liquid diet for a few days to rest the bowel
Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen
High-fiber diet following recovery
Surgery to remove diseased parts of the colon in severe or recurrent cases
Ayurvedic perspective
Ayurveda classifies diverticular disease under the umbrella of 'Pakvashaya Gata Vata' and 'Vibandha', where an imbalance of Vata leads to dryness and pressure in the colon (Pakvashaya). When inflammation occurs, it is seen as 'Antra Vidradhi' (internal abscess) caused by Pitta aggravation. The root cause is typically 'Mandagni' (weak digestive fire) leading to the accumulation of 'Ama' (toxins).
Ayurvedic dietary guidelines
Increase intake of soluble fiber through cooked vegetables and whole grains during remission
Consume warm, liquid, or semi-solid foods like Khichari to ease digestion
Avoid dry, cold, and processed foods that aggravate Vata
Limit spicy, fermented, and sour foods to prevent Pitta-related inflammation
Incorporate cow's Ghee into the diet to lubricate the colon walls
