Depression (Vishada, Avasada, Cintā)
In Ayurveda, depression, often referred to as "Vishada," "Avasada," or "Manodaurbalya," is viewed as a holistic imbalance involving the body's vital energies (doshas), mind (manas), and consciousness (buddhi), rather than solely a mental health disorder. It is primarily considered a result of imbalances in the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—along with impaired digestion (Agni) and the accumulation of toxins (Ama). The mind's qualities (gunas) of Sattva (clarity), Rajas (activity), and Tamas (inertia) also play a crucial role, with an excess of Rajas or Tamas contributing to negative mental states. Ayurveda emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and spiritual health, offering a personalized approach to restore balance and promote overall well-being.
Common symptoms
Persistent sadness or a low mood
Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
Irritability or frustration, even over small matters
Frequent crying spells
Fatigue and low energy (common in Vata and Kapha imbalances)
Negative psychological states impacting agni homeostasis
Ayurvedic perspective
Ayurveda views depression as a holistic imbalance within the body, mind, and spirit, rather than solely a mental health disorder. It is considered a reflection of deeper disharmony and is deeply connected to physical and spiritual well-being. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe depression under conditions such as 'Vishada,' 'Avasada,' and 'Manodaurbalya,' which arise due to disturbances in mental energies (Manas Doshas)—Rajas and Tamas. Imbalances in the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), combined with impaired digestion (Agni) and the accumulation of toxins (Ama), are believed to contribute significantly to depressive states.
