Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are small, fluid-filled lesions that typically appear in clusters on or around the lips and mouth. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious, especially when the blisters are oozing.
Common symptoms
Tingling, itching, or burning sensation around the lips before blisters appear
Small, fluid-filled blisters along the edge of the lips
Prescription oral antiviral medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir
Pain-relieving creams with lidocaine or benzocaine
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
Cold compresses to reduce redness and swelling
Ayurvedic perspective
Cold sores are traditionally understood as Jwara Pidaka, which are eruptions associated with fever or internal heat. From an Ayurvedic standpoint, they result from an aggravation of the Pitta dosha in the Rakta (blood) and Mamsa (muscle/skin) tissues. This internal heat, often combined with Ama (metabolic toxins), manifests externally on the sensitive skin of the lips when the body's immunity is compromised.
Ayurvedic dietary guidelines
Avoid spicy, salty, and sour foods that increase Pitta
Limit intake of fermented foods, vinegar, and citrus fruits
Include cooling foods like cucumber, coconut water, and cilantro
