Broken arm or wrist (Bhagna / Asthi Bhagna)

A broken arm or wrist, medically termed a fracture, involves a break or crack in one or more of the bones in the upper limb, including the humerus (upper arm), ulna, radius (forearm), or the small bones of the wrist. These injuries commonly result from trauma such as falls, sports-related incidents, or accidents. From an Ayurvedic perspective, bone tissue (Asthi Dhatu) is fundamental for the body's structure and movement, with its health closely linked to a balanced Vata dosha and robust digestive fire (Agni).

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, bone fractures are referred to as 'Bhagna' or 'Asthi Bhagna', meaning the breaking or dislocation of bones or joints. The bone tissue system is called Asthi Dhatu, which is nourished daily by Mamsa Dhatu (muscle tissue). A fracture leads to pain, swelling, and restricted movement. Ayurvedic management of fractures, known as Bhagna Chikitsa, focuses on a holistic approach that includes internal medicines, external applications, immobilization, dietary regulation, and therapies. The goals are to restore the original position of the bone (Sandhana), keep it stable (Sthirikarana), accelerate tissue repair and reduce inflammation (Ropana), and restore strength and function (Rasayana). Ayurveda aims to reduce inflammation, prevent local infection, increase blood supply, increase collagen in the bone, and revitalize dead bone tissue.
