Anaemia (iron deficiency), see Iron deficiency anaemia (Pandu Roga)
Iron deficiency anaemia is a common condition where the body lacks sufficient iron to produce enough healthy red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the body's tissues. This deficiency leads to a reduction in hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that binds oxygen, resulting in symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. From an Ayurvedic perspective, anemia (Pandu Roga) is often attributed to an imbalance in Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Doshas, particularly vitiated Pitta Dosha, and an imbalance in Agni (digestive fire), leading to reduced blood cells.
Common symptoms
Extreme tiredness/fatigue/lack of energy
Weakness
Pale or yellow "sallow" skin
Shortness of breath, especially with activity
Chest pain, especially with activity
Rapid heartbeat or noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)
Pounding or "whooshing" in the ears (tinnitus)
Headache or being dizzy/lightheaded
Cold hands and feet
Irritation or soreness of the tongue
Brittle nails or spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia)
Restless legs syndrome
Craving for non-food items like ice, dirt, or clay (pica)
Poor sleep
Cold intolerance
Food tasting strange
Feeling itchy
Hair loss
Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
Painful open sores (ulcers) in the corners of the mouth
Possible causes
Blood loss: The most common cause in adults, including heavy menstrual periods, gastrointestinal bleeding (from peptic ulcers, hiatal hernia, colon polyps, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, oesophagitis, angiodysplasia, or regular use of NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen), and frequent blood donation.
Insufficient dietary iron: Not consuming enough iron-rich foods. This is a common cause in children and can be a risk factor for vegetarians and vegans.
Poor absorption of iron: Malabsorption can occur due to gastrointestinal tract abnormalities, certain gastrointestinal surgeries (like gastric bypass), conditions affecting digestion (such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, peptic ulcers), or medications that stop stomach acid production (like proton pump inhibitors).
Increased iron requirements: During growth spurts in children and adolescents, and during pregnancy and lactation.
Parasitic infections: In the developing world, parasitic worms, malaria, and HIV/AIDS can increase the risk.
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, iron deficiency anemia is known as Pandu Roga, a condition primarily driven by an imbalance in Pitta dosha, with secondary involvement of Vata and Kapha. The pathology is linked to dysfunctions in Rasa-Vaha Srotas (nutrient transport channels) and Rakta-Vaha Srotas (hematopoietic and circulatory pathways). Weak digestion, referred to as Agnimandya, leads to the formation of Ama (metabolic toxins), which obstructs the proper transformation of nutrients into functional blood components. Improper diet (Apathya Ahara) and detrimental lifestyle habits (Viharaja Nidana) are considered contributing factors that disturb doshic equilibrium and impair hematopoiesis.

Lifestyle tips
Practice Nidana Parivarjana, which involves identifying and avoiding dietary and lifestyle triggers that contribute to doshic imbalances.
Enhance digestive fire (Agni) and metabolic function using Agnivardhaka (digestive stimulants).
Consider Panchakarma therapies like Snehana (Oleation Therapy), Swedana (Fomentation Therapy), and Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation) for detoxification and to restore hematopoietic function, based on patient strength.
Engage in Yoga and Pranayama to improve overall health and circulation.
Adopt Rasayana Therapy for rejuvenation, to enhance overall strength and immunity.
Follow Ayurvedic principles of proper food combining to enhance digestion and nutrient absorption.
Prioritize liver health, as it plays a significant role in blood production.
Eat in calm surroundings, avoiding multitasking or stress during meals.
Ensure adequate rest and complete 7-8 hours of sleep daily.
Practice gentle yoga or stretching to improve blood circulation.
Avoid drinking tea or coffee immediately after meals, as they can inhibit iron absorption.
Expose yourself to morning sunlight to support metabolism and vitamin D synthesis.
Cook food in iron pots or pans to naturally enhance its iron content.
Manage stress through meditation and deep breathing exercises.
Avoid excessive physical exercise beyond your capacity, sleeping during the day, excessive sexual activity, not following seasonal health practices, and suppressing natural urges.
