Whiplash (Greeva Shoola (neck pain), Manyastambha (neck stiffness), Grivastambha (neck pain and stiffness), Abhigataj Roga (injury-induced disease), Agantuj Roga (diseases from external force).)

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, similar to the cracking of a whip. It is also known as cervical acceleration-deceleration (CAD) injury or whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). This sudden motion can strain or damage the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, discs, and nerves in the neck and upper spine. Whiplash is commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents, particularly rear-end collisions, but can also result from sports injuries, falls, or physical abuse. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may appear immediately or be delayed for several hours or even days after the injury.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, whiplash is not described as a single, distinct disease but is understood through the lens of injury (Abhigata or Agantuj Roga) and its impact on the doshas, primarily Vata. The sudden, forceful movement of the neck in whiplash leads to an aggravation of Vata dosha, which governs movement, dryness, and nerve function. This Vata imbalance manifests as pain, stiffness, restricted movement, headaches, dizziness, and tenderness in the neck, upper back, and shoulders. In chronic cases, Pitta dosha (associated with inflammation and burning sensations) and Kapha dosha (linked to congestion, heaviness, and impaired circulation) can also become imbalanced. The injury can affect various tissues including bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves in the cervical region.
