Warts and verrucas (Charmakeela)
Warts and verrucas are common, small, rough lumps or growths on the skin caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are generally benign (noncancerous) and can appear anywhere on the body, though they are most common on the hands and feet (where they are called verrucas or plantar warts). While often harmless, they can sometimes be itchy, painful, or embarrassing. They can go away on their own, but this may take months or even years.
Common symptoms
Firm and rough texture.
Skin-colored, brown, grey, yellow, or black.
Can be dome-shaped, flat, bumpy, cauliflower-like, smooth, or thread-like (filiform).
Appear on palms, knuckles, knees, fingers, face, lower legs, and feet.
Verrucas (plantar warts) on feet may have tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) under hard skin and can be painful, feeling like standing on a needle.
Can occur singly or in clusters (mosaic warts).
May itch.
Most warts are painless, but some can hurt when touched, especially plantar warts when standing or walking.
Possible causes
Caused by infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Over 100 types of HPV exist, with specific strains causing different types of warts.
The virus enters the skin through small cuts, scrapes, or damaged skin, causing extra cell growth and thickening of the outer skin layer.
Warts are contagious and can spread through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly via contaminated surfaces (e.g., towels, razors, public showers, pool areas).
Risk factors include: children and young adults, weakened immune systems (e.g., HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, diabetes), injuries to the skin, frequently wet hands or feet, heavy sweating (hyperhidrosis), nail biting or picking at cuticles/hangnails, shaving over warts, direct contact with other people's warts, and scratching or picking one's own warts (autoinoculation).
Ayurvedic perspective: Warts (Charmakeela) are primarily attributed to the vitiation (aggravation) of Vata and Kapha Doshas, affecting Rakta (blood) and Mamsa (muscle/flesh) Dhatus (tissues). Accumulation of Ama (toxins) due to improper diet, lifestyle, weak digestion, and low immunity also contributes.
Ayurvedic perspective
In Ayurveda, warts, known as Charmakeela, are considered non-cancerous skin growths primarily caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The Ayurvedic perspective attributes their formation to an underlying imbalance in the body's doshas, particularly the vitiation of Vata and Kapha, and sometimes Pitta. This doshic disruption leads to the accumulation of toxins (Ama) and a weakened immune system, creating a conducive environment for the HPV virus to manifest. Vata imbalance contributes to the dry, hard, and rough texture of warts, while Kapha imbalance leads to fleshy, raised growths and toxin buildup. Pitta imbalance can result in reddish, inflamed, or burning warts.
