Thoracic outlet syndrome (Vata Vyadhi (correlated with Kakshadhara Marma Vidhya Lakshana))

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a group of disorders that occur when nerves or blood vessels in the thoracic outlet—the space between the collarbone and the first rib—become compressed. This compression can affect the brachial plexus (nerves that supply movement and feeling to the arm and hand), the subclavian artery, or the subclavian vein. TOS is classified into three main types: neurogenic TOS (compression of nerves, most common, accounting for over 90% of cases), venous TOS (compression of a vein), and arterial TOS (compression of an artery, the rarest type). Symptoms typically affect the upper body, including the neck, upper chest, shoulder, arm, and hand, often on one side.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is primarily understood as a 'Vata Vyadhi,' a disorder caused by an imbalance or aggravation of the Vata dosha. Vata, composed of air and ether elements, governs all movement in the body, including nerve impulses, circulation, and muscular activity. When Vata is imbalanced, it can lead to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, stiffness, and circulatory issues, which are characteristic of TOS. The condition involves the compression of neurovascular structures (nerves and blood vessels) in the thoracic outlet, affecting 'mamsa' (muscle), 'asthi' (bone), and 'majjavaha srotas' (nervous tissue channels). Factors like trauma (e.g., whiplash), repetitive motion, poor posture, and chronic stress are known to aggravate Vata and contribute to the onset or worsening of TOS symptoms. TOS symptoms are also closely related to the 'Vidhya Lakshana' (symptoms of injury) of 'Kakshadhara Marma,' a vital energy point located in the subclavicular area towards the axilla, involving nerves of the brachial plexus.
