Strep A (Gala Shotha)

Strep A, or Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a common type of bacteria, specifically *Streptococcus pyogenes*, that can cause a range of infections, most often affecting the throat and skin. While many Strep A infections are mild and easily treated, some can be more serious, leading to severe conditions such as invasive group A strep (iGAS), which can be life-threatening.

Ayurvedic perspective

From an Ayurvedic perspective, streptococcal infections, such as Strep A, are primarily viewed as an imbalance of the Pitta and Kapha doshas. These infections manifest when the body's natural defenses are weakened, allowing harmful bacteria to thrive. Poor diet, stress, and an unhealthy lifestyle can exacerbate this imbalance, leading to inflammation and infection. Sore throat, known as Gala Shotha or Kanthashoola, is linked to aggravated Kapha dosha, which governs mucus production, leading to congestion and heaviness, and Pitta dosha, which controls inflammation and metabolism, causing heat, burning sensation, and redness. In some cases, Vata dosha can also be involved, leading to dryness, scratchiness, or hoarseness. Ayurveda aims to restore dosha balance, reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system (Ojas), and improve digestion (Agni) to prevent recurrence and promote overall well-being.
