Reflux in babies (Ksheeralasaka / Urdhvagami Amlapitta)

Reflux in babies, also known as infant gastroesophageal reflux (GER), occurs when stomach contents leak back up into the esophagus. It is a very common condition affecting up to 50-60% of infants, peaking around 4 to 6 months. In most cases, it is a normal part of development that does not cause pain or health issues, provided the baby is gaining weight and growing normally. This is often referred to as being a 'happy spitter.'

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, infant reflux is primarily understood through the concepts of Ksheeralasaka and Urdhvagami Amlapitta. Ksheeralasaka occurs when the infant's digestive fire (Mandagni) is insufficient to process milk (Ksheera), often due to Stanyadushti (vitiation of breast milk) caused by the mother's diet or lifestyle. This leads to the upward movement of sour, undigested milk contents. The condition is characterized by an imbalance in Pitta, which governs heat and acidity, and Kapha, which regulates the protective mucosal lining, often aggravated by Vata causing regurgitation.
