Non-cancerous (benign) brain tumours (Mastulunga Arbuda)

A benign brain tumour is a slow-growing, non-malignant mass of abnormal cells that develops in the brain or surrounding tissues. Unlike cancerous tumours, they do not spread to other parts of the body; however, they can be life-threatening because the skull is a rigid space. As the tumour grows, it can increase intracranial pressure or compress vital brain structures, leading to significant neurological impairment or death if untreated.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, benign brain tumors are classified under the umbrella of 'Arbuda' (neoplasms) or 'Granthi' (glandular swellings/cysts). Specifically, when located in the brain, it is termed 'Mastulunga Arbuda' or 'Shiro-Arbuda'. According to Sushruta Samhita, an Arbuda is a round, stable, deep-seated, slow-growing fleshy mass that does not typically undergo suppuration (pus formation). Benign tumors are characterized as 'Sadhya' (manageable/curable) growths where the vitiated Doshas (primarily Kapha and Vata) cause abnormal proliferation of 'Mamsa' (muscle) and 'Medas' (fatty) tissues within the 'Mastulunga' (brain matter). Unlike malignant forms (Raktarbuda), benign varieties lack the aggressive vascular involvement and systemic toxicity but cause localized pressure ('Aavarana') on neurological channels ('Vata-vaha Srotas').
