Lazy Eye (Amblyopia) (Jihma (or Vataja Timira))

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is a vision development disorder where the brain fails to fully process input from one eye and increasingly favors the other. This leads to reduced vision in the weaker eye, even though the eye itself often appears normal. It typically develops in early childhood, from birth up to age 7, and is the leading cause of vision loss in children.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Lazy Eye is primarily understood through the lens of 'Shalakya Tantra' (ophthalmology). It is often categorized under 'Drishtighata' or 'Vataja Timira', where a systemic imbalance of Vata and Pitta doshas leads to the underdevelopment of the ocular tissues (Dhatus) and impaired nerve-muscle coordination. This results in 'Jihma' (distorted alignment) or a loss of functional 'Drishti' (vision) in one eye because the 'Alochaka Pitta' (the fire element governing sight) and 'Prana Vata' (governing nerve impulses) are not synchronized between the brain and the eye.
