Joint hypermobility syndrome (Sandhi Vata Vriddhi)

Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) is a genetic condition affecting connective tissue, characterized by unusually flexible joints accompanied by chronic pain and various other symptoms. It is frequently categorized under Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and shares many characteristics with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). While many individuals possess hypermobile joints without experiencing problems, JHS specifically refers to hypermobility that leads to issues such as pain, stiffness, and increased susceptibility to injuries.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) is primarily understood as a Vata-dominant imbalance, reflecting disturbed Vata dosha within the sandhi srotas (joint channels). Aggravated Vata, characterized by cold, light, dry, and rough qualities, can lead to the drying of synovial fluid and the weakening of ligaments, which are crucial for dhatu (tissue) support. This disturbance also impacts Agni (digestive/metabolic fire), resulting in the accumulation of Ama (toxic byproducts) in the tissues. The clinical pattern is often referred to as Sandhi Vata Vriddhi with Ama in the srotas, manifesting as loose joints, painful clicking, easy sprains, and persistent fatigue. Additionally, joint instability is linked to Dhatu Kshaya, specifically the depletion of Asthi (bone) and Majja (bone marrow) tissues, which compromises joint integrity. When Vata is in excess, it can lead to severe imbalance in the joints, causing pain and discomfort.
