Japanese encephalitis (Abhinyasa Sannipata Jwara / Mastishka Jwara)

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a serious viral infection of the brain caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a flavivirus related to Dengue and West Nile. It is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable viral encephalitis in Asia and the Western Pacific, primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Culex mosquitoes. While the vast majority (over 99%) of infections are asymptomatic or result in mild febrile illness, symptomatic cases are severe, with a case-fatality rate as high as 30%. Among survivors, approximately 30-50% experience long-term or permanent neurological, cognitive, or behavioral disabilities. The virus is maintained in an enzootic cycle between mosquitoes and vertebrate hosts, particularly pigs and wading birds, making rural and agricultural areas the highest risk zones.

Possible causes

Ayurvedic perspective

Japanese Encephalitis is traditionally correlated with Abhinyasa Sannipata Jwara, a severe tridoshic fever characterized by profound neurological involvement, delirium (Pralapa), and semiconsciousness (Nidropetha). It is classified as an Agantuja (exogenous) condition caused by Bhoota Abhishanga (microbial infection) that rapidly depletes the body's Ojas (vitality), leading to inflammation of the brain tissues (Mastishka Shotha).
