Hyperparathyroidism (Asthivaha Srotas Dusti / Asthi-Kshaya)

Hyperparathyroidism is a condition where one or more of the parathyroid glands become overactive and produce excess parathyroid hormone (PTH). This imbalance causes the body to pull calcium from the bones into the bloodstream, leading to hypercalcemia (high blood calcium). There are three types: Primary (caused by a problem within the glands themselves, like a benign tumor), Secondary (caused by another condition, such as kidney disease, that lowers calcium levels), and Tertiary (occurring after long-term secondary hyperparathyroidism).

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Hyperparathyroidism is viewed as a disorder of the Asthivaha Srotas (bone-carrying channels) and Majjavaha Srotas (marrow-carrying channels). It is primarily characterized as Asthi-Kshaya (depletion of bone tissue) driven by an imbalance in Dhatvagni (tissue fire). When the Asthi-Dhatvagni becomes overactive (Tikshnagni), it causes excessive resorption of bone tissue, releasing calcium into the bloodstream. This follows the Ashraya-Ashrayi principle where an increase in Vata leads to a decrease in its container, the bone tissue. If a nodule is present, it is classified under Granthi Roga (glandular growth).
