Hernia (umbilical), see Umbilical hernia (Nabhivardhana (specifically for umbilical hernia); Antra Vriddhi (general for hernia))

In Ayurveda, an umbilical hernia is referred to as "Antra Vriddhi" and is understood as a condition where internal organs or tissues protrude through a weakened abdominal wall near the navel. This is primarily attributed to an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, which leads to weakened connective tissues, impaired digestion, and irregular bodily movements. An imbalance in Pitta dosha can also contribute by causing inflammation and acidity.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, hernia is often termed 'Antra Vriddhi' and is understood as a condition arising from imbalanced doshas, particularly aggravated Vata, which weakens abdominal muscles and leads to the protrusion of internal organs through a compromised abdominal wall. This imbalance can also be linked to a weakened digestive fire (Agni) and the accumulation of toxins (Ama), contributing to improper digestion and muscle weakness. Pitta imbalance may cause inflammation and acidity, while Kapha imbalance can lead to stagnation and a feeling of heaviness in the affected area. The Ayurvedic approach aims to restore doshic balance, strengthen the abdominal muscles, and enhance overall digestive health to manage and alleviate symptoms.
