Hereditary spastic paraplegia (Pangu (or Adhibala-pravritta Vatavyadhi))

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), also known as familial spastic paraparesis, is a group of rare, progressive inherited neurological disorders. It is characterized by the degeneration of the long axons in the spinal cord, which leads to increasing weakness and muscle stiffness (spasticity) primarily in the lower limbs. While it is a lifelong and progressive condition, it typically does not shorten life expectancy.

Ayurvedic perspective

HSP is classified within the broad category of 'Vata Vyadhi' (neurological disorders). Because it is a genetic condition, it is specifically termed 'Adhibala-pravritta Vyadhi', originating from 'Beeja Dosha' (genetic defects in the sperm or ovum). The characteristic spasticity is viewed as 'Stambha' (stiffness) caused by 'Kapha-avrita Vata', where the Kapha dosha obstructs the movement of Vyana Vayu, which is responsible for motor functions and coordination. Over time, this leads to 'Dhatu Kshaya' (tissue depletion) in the 'Majja Dhatu' (nervous system).
