Hepatitis B (Bahupitta Kamala / Yakrit Vikara)

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It can manifest as either an acute, short-term illness (lasting less than six months) or a chronic, long-term infection. Chronic hepatitis B increases the risk of developing life-threatening complications such as cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver failure, and liver cancer. The virus is highly infectious and is transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, Hepatitis B is primarily correlated with Kamala (Jaundice), specifically categorized as Bahupitta Kamala or Ubhayapatha Ashrita Swatantra Kamala. It is understood as a disease of the Raktavaha Srotas (blood-carrying channels) where the Yakrit (liver) and Pleeha (spleen) are the main sites of affliction. The pathogenesis involves a severe vitiation of Pitta Dosha, which contaminates the Rakta (blood) and Mamsa (muscle) Dhatus, leading to liver inflammation, jaundice, and impaired metabolic functions. Classical texts describe it as a condition where the increased Pitta burns the tissues, resulting in the characteristic yellow discoloration and systemic weakness.
