Flat Feet (Sama Pada / Samtalaka)

Flat feet, also known as pes planus or fallen arches, is a common condition where the arches on the inside of the feet are flattened, causing the entire sole to touch the floor when standing. While many people experience no symptoms, others may face foot pain, swelling, and alignment issues. The condition can be present from childhood if arches never fully develop or can be acquired later in life due to injury, aging, or obesity.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, flat feet are conceptualized through the lens of 'Sama Pada' or 'Samtalaka,' where the natural 'Kurcha' (anatomical arch) is underdeveloped or collapsed. This condition is categorized as a 'Vata-Vyadhi' (Vata disorder) specifically involving 'Vyana Vayu,' which governs physical structure and movement. The loss of the arch indicates a weakness in 'Snayu' (ligaments/tendons) and 'Mamsa Dhatu' (muscle tissue), often resulting in an improper distribution of weight that can lead to 'Vatakantaka' (heel pain or plantar fasciitis) and 'Padbhramsha' (displacement of the foot structure).
