Early or delayed puberty (Artava Pravritti Vikara)

Puberty is the transition into sexual maturity involving hormonal and physical changes. Precocious (early) puberty is defined as the onset of secondary sex characteristics before age 8 in girls and age 9 in boys. Delayed puberty refers to the absence of these changes by age 13 in girls and age 14 in boys.

Ayurvedic perspective

Ayurveda views puberty as the transition from the Kapha-dominant stage of childhood to the Pitta-dominant stage of youth. Early puberty, or Akaala Artava Darshana, is typically associated with an aggravated Pitta and Kapha that accelerates the maturation of Rasa and Artava Dhatus. Delayed puberty, or Vilambita Artava Darshana, is often attributed to Vata imbalance leading to dryness and depletion of the Rasa Dhatu (plasma) or a blockage in the Artava Vaha Srotas (reproductive channels). Proper timing of puberty depends on the health of the Dhatus and the balance of Apana Vayu.
