Cyclothymia (Manasika Roga / Kaphaja Unmada (in some cases))
Cyclothymia, also known as cyclothymic disorder, is a milder form of bipolar disorder characterized by chronic mood fluctuations that include periods of hypomania (elevated mood) and mild depressive symptoms. These mood shifts are less severe and of shorter duration than full manic or major depressive episodes, but can still significantly disrupt daily life. The condition typically lasts for at least two years in adults (one year in children and adolescents), with mood swings occurring for at least half that time and no more than two months symptom-free.
Common symptoms
Exaggerated feeling of happiness or well-being (euphoria)
Extreme optimism
Inflated self-esteem
Talking more than usual or rapid speech
Poor judgment, leading to risky behavior or unwise choices
Racing thoughts
Irritable or agitated behavior
Excessive physical activity
Increased drive to perform or achieve goals (sexual, work-related, social)
Decreased need for sleep
Tendency to be easily distracted or inability to concentrate
Feeling sad, hopeless, or empty
Tearfulness
Irritability, especially in children and teenagers
Loss of interest in activities once considered enjoyable
Changes in eating patterns (eating more or less than usual) or weight
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep/insomnia or trouble staying awake/hypersomnia)
Restlessness
Fatigue or significant loss of energy
Possible causes
Genetics: Cyclothymia, depression, and bipolar disorder tend to run in families, suggesting a genetic link.
Brain differences: Changes in the brain's neurobiology or the way the brain works.
Environmental issues: Traumatic experiences or prolonged periods of stress may trigger the condition in some people.
Ayurvedic perspective
Ayurveda views mood swings and emotional instability, characteristic of Cyclothymia, as a result of disharmony in the body's energies, known as doshas. Mental well-being is deeply connected to the balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and the three mental qualities (gunas): Sattva (clarity, harmony), Rajas (activity, restlessness), and Tamas (inertia, confusion). A predominance of Sattva is essential for healthy mental functioning, while excess Rajas can lead to anxiety, anger, or addiction, and excess Tamas may result in depression or lethargy. Cyclothymia, with its recurrent episodes of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that are less severe than full-blown episodes, is interpreted as a mental state characterized by these fluctuating moods. Factors contributing to such imbalances include dosha imbalances, poor digestion (Agni), accumulation of toxins (Ama), hormonal fluctuations, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. In some cases, cyclothymic disorder has been considered akin to 'Kaphaja unmada' in Ayurvedic literature.

Tulsi (Holy Basil - Ocimum sanctum): An adaptogenic herb known for stress-reducing and immune-boosting properties, it helps stabilize mood and reduce emotional heaviness.
Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi): Renowned for its calming and grounding properties, it relaxes the nervous system, aids restful sleep, and eases anxiety and irritability.

Lifestyle tips
Establish a consistent daily routine (Dinacharya) for waking, sleeping, and eating to maintain mental and emotional harmony.
Prioritize quality sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, and reduce screen time before bed to allow the mind to wind down naturally.
Incorporate regular mind-body practices such as yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) to relieve stress, cultivate self-awareness, and balance energy.
Engage in regular, moderate exercise to support mental and physical resilience.
Practice self-care rituals and engage in activities that bring joy and tranquility to cultivate Sattva (purity, harmony, and balance).
Cultivate positive relationships and share your feelings with trusted individuals.
Consider periodic detoxification (Panchakarma) under expert guidance to eliminate physical and emotional toxins.
Avoid sensory overstimulation, including excessive screen time and loud noises, to maintain a calm and focused mind.
Adapt your lifestyle and diet according to seasonal changes (Ritucharya) to align with natural environmental rhythms.
Practice Achara Rasayana, which emphasizes ethical behavior, positive mental habits, and right conduct to nourish the mind and emotions.
