Bowel cancer (Pakwashaya Gata Arbuda)
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, colon cancer, or rectal cancer, is a type of cancer that develops from the inner lining of the colon or rectum, which are parts of the large intestine. It is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of colon cells that can invade and spread to other parts of the body. Most bowel cancers originate from small, non-cancerous growths called polyps, which can become invasive cancer if undetected. Early detection and removal of these polyps can significantly reduce the risk of bowel cancer. It is the third most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths.
Common symptoms
Change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or changes in consistency like thinner stools)
Blood in the stool (red, dark red, black, or tar-like appearance)
Bleeding from the bottom
Abdominal pain, bloating, or cramping
Unexplained weight loss
Fatigue or feeling very tired and short of breath (signs of anemia)
Anal or rectal pain
A lump in the anus or rectum
Feeling of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement
Possible causes
Older age (most cases over 50, but increasing in younger people)
In Ayurveda, bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is often interpreted as "Pakwashaya Gata Arbuda" or "Pakwasaya Gata Vikara" (malignant tumor of the colon/rectum). It is also correlated with "Arbuda" and "Granthi" (abnormal growths or tumors). The condition is understood to involve "Rakta Dhatu Dushti" (vitiation of blood tissue), "Mamsa Dhatvagnimandya" (impaired muscle tissue metabolism), and a disturbance of "Apana Vayu". Ayurvedic principles suggest that bowel cancer arises from a weakened digestive fire ("Agni imbalance"), the accumulation of toxins ("Ama"), impaired cellular regeneration, and a disruption of the body's innate intelligence. The Ayurvedic approach focuses on correcting the internal ecosystem, which includes the Agni (digestive fire), Srotas (microchannels of circulation), and Dhatus (tissues), to restore balance and discourage abnormal cell growth.
