Blepharitis (Krimigranthi / Vartma-Shotha)

Blepharitis is a chronic, non-contagious inflammation of the eyelids, typically occurring at the base of the eyelashes or the meibomian glands. It is characterized by redness, irritation, and the formation of dandruff-like crusts on the eyelashes. While it rarely causes permanent vision damage, it is often a persistent condition that requires long-term management through hygiene and occasionally medication.

Ayurvedic perspective

Blepharitis is clinically correlated with 'Krimigranthi' and 'Pakshmashata' within the category of 'Vartmaroga' (diseases of the eyelids). According to the Sushruta Samhita (Uttaratantra), it manifests as chronic inflammation at the junction of the eyelashes and the eyelid (Vartma-sandhi). It is characterized by 'Kandu' (itching), 'Shotha' (swelling), and 'Daha' (burning sensation). The pathology involves the accumulation of morbid Kapha and Rakta (blood) which leads to the formation of small cyst-like structures or crusting at the hair follicles of the eyelashes. Classical texts emphasize that the neglect of 'Netra Abhisyanda' (conjunctivitis) often progresses into these chronic lid conditions.
