Black eye (Akshi Abhighata, Vrana Shotha)

A black eye, medically known as a periorbital hematoma or periorbital contusion, is bruising and swelling around the eye due to bleeding from broken blood vessels under the skin, usually caused by an injury to the face or head. While the name suggests eye injury, the eye itself is usually not directly affected; rather, it refers to the skin around the eye. Most black eyes are not serious and typically resolve within one to two weeks with home care.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, a black eye, or periorbital hematoma, is primarily understood as an injury (Abhighataja Vrana) resulting from external trauma (Aaghat). This blunt force causes capillaries to burst and blood to leak into the surrounding loose areolar tissue around the eye, leading to discoloration, swelling, and tenderness. The condition is seen as a vitiation of all three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata imbalance is associated with pain, movement disruption, and is aggravated by trauma. Pitta, which governs blood and circulation, is vitiated, leading to the characteristic discoloration, inflammation, and heat. Kapha imbalance contributes to the accumulation of fluids and swelling in the affected area. The body's natural healing process involves the breakdown and reabsorption of this accumulated blood, which accounts for the color changes observed in a black eye as it heals.
