Animal and Human Bites (Jangama Visha / Damsha)

Animal and human bites are injuries caused by teeth that carry a high risk of infection due to the complex bacteria found in saliva. While dog bites are the most frequent, cat bites are significantly more likely to cause deep-seated infections due to their sharp, needle-like teeth, and human bites—especially 'clenched-fist' injuries—are clinically dangerous because of specific human oral pathogens. Major concerns following a bite include bacterial cellulitis, rabies, and tetanus.

Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, animal and human bites are categorized under 'Agada Tantra' (Toxicology) as 'Jangama Visha' (poison of animal origin) or 'Damsha' (bites). Classical texts like the 'Sushruta Samhita' (Kalpa Sthana) and 'Ashtanga Hridaya' (Uttara Sthana) differentiate bites by their toxicity levels. A dog bite is specifically termed 'Alarka Visha' (rabies-related), while human bites are often managed as 'Dushi Visha' (latent or accumulated toxins) because human saliva, though not naturally venomous, carries biological impurities that vitiate the blood. The primary goal is 'Vishaghna' (neutralizing the toxin) and 'Rakta Prasadana' (purifying the blood) to prevent the spread of systemic infection and neurological complications.
